Gaius Valerius Flaccus flourished c. BCE and composed an incomplete epic Argonautica in eight books, on the quest for the Golden Fleece. Valerius effectively rehandles the story already told by Apollonius Rhodius, recalls Virgilian language and thought, displays learning, and alludes to contemporary Rome. Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica is one of the most significant surviving works of Flavian epic, which has recently become much more popular as a field of study and teaching in Latin literature. This is the first commentary in English directly tailored to the needs of graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

The Roman writer Gaius Valerius Flaccus (d. c. 90 CE) composed what would have been Antiquity's longest and most thorough poem on Jason's journey, had he lived to complete his twelve-book us completed five books and part of a sixth, drawing on Apollonius and a plethora of ancient sources, many of which are now lost or known only by fragments.   The Poems of Ernest Dowson Ernest Christopher Dowson (2 August - 23 February ) was an English poet, novelist, and short-story writer, often associated with the Decadent movement. Valerius has combined the legends in Herodotus 4. 5 and 4. 9, in which Colaxais is the grandson of Jupiter by a nymph, and Hercules begets sons by a woman whose lower half is serpent; he also makes her end in two snakes instead of one, if that is the point of “geminos.” 4.

The reference is probably to the Twelfth Legion, called Fulminata. But Valerius tells us that the book's purpose is practical: he decided to select worthwhile material from famous writers so that people looking for illustrative examples might be spared the trouble of research.
