John Skelton, –, English poet and humanist. Tutor to Prince Henry (later Henry VIII), he later (c) became rector of Diss, Norfolk. In he began to call himself royal orator, a position that may have been conferred by Henry VIII requiring that Skelton carry on some royal correspondence and write occasional official poems.   John Scattergood's 'The Complete English Poems of John Skelton', originally published in and long out of print, was the leading academic edition with comprehensive notes. Students are currently limited to searching for Skelton's poems in anthologies. This new, revised edition contains the poems, accompanied by around pages of revised /5(2).
